The  Fulmar - £2700

Fulmar decked sailing canoe

FULMAR is a  decked solo expedition sailing canoe, featuring:

  • Loa -14ft 6in
  • Beam -40in
  • Approximate stripped weight -90lbs
  • Approximate rigged weight -115lbs
  • Side buoyancy tanks for easy capsize recovery.
  • Car toppable
  • Watertight storage for camping gear.
  • Leeboard or kick up dagger board.
  • Choice of rig size 44sq ft or 54 sq ft (5sq m).
  • Shorter length for responsiveness and faster tacking - really is a joy to sail!
  • Double paddle, trolley and outriggers are availiable as extras (see accessories)

Fulmar is our solo expedition sailing canoe. It has the same hull as our Curlew but has full fore and aft decks with sidetanks. This enables it to come up dry after a capsize. Lower freeboard makes it easy to climb back in and yet the decks make it a very dry boat. Large fore and aft hatches allow ample secure stowage for loads of expedition gear.

It is a joy to sail, with wide side decks for sitting out and a shorter length that allows it to turn through the tack as well as most small dinghies. It's flat deck means that it securely goes upside down on the roof of your car for easy transporting and a dedicated portage trolley means that it is easy to move to the waters edge for launching. The trolley can be carried on board with you so that on an expedition you can easily get the canoe up the beach when you camp. This feature is unlike most other small boats which usually require a trailer and slipway.

We recommend our Bermudan rig for the Fulmar, as it is efficient and quick to reef. We can supply either the standard O.C.S.G. 44sq ft or our larger 54sq ft for better performance in light airs. We will however supply a Lugsail Ketch for those who prefer. (the ketch rig does interfere with the large stowage somewhat).

Fulmar comes with deck lines and a convenient position to stow the split double paddle. We can offer the boat as standard with a leeboard or with our special kick up daggerboard.

Fulmar can be fitted with our outriggers for extra seaworthiness.

Large, watertight storage hatches fore and aft, adjustable seat for fore and aft trim.We offer a dedicated portage trolley for launching and recovering the canoe. It is compact enough to take with you to protect your canoe when you land on a distant shore, and makes it easier to get it up the beach above the high water mark.

Shearwater and Fulmar in the sound of Iona

We took this Fulmar on our expedition around Mull this year (2009) and it proved a very seaworthy craft. It also won several races at O.C.S.G. events. It would make a very useful boat for racing at your local dinghy club and for going on expeditions further afield.
